Five SEO Myths Everyone Should Know

It is an important skill for anyone to understand the basics of search engine optimization – Even outside of the marketing industry. SEO Services Toronto companies, web designers, article writers, journalists, webmasters, bloggers and much more need to be familiar with the factors search engines use to rank websites and the content.

The field of SEO is an extremely complex scenario and a confusing industry because the only 100% authoritative and comprehensive source for info about how the search engines rank websites is the search engines themselves which change on a day to day basis. The thing is, these search engines reveal very little detail about the information which helps to eliminate spammers from polluting the search results. So that leaves room for speculation, misinformation, and myths which can be confusing for any individual.

Below you will review five prominent SEO myths that will help you receive factual information you can use to optimize your website pages.

Myth # 1: Having A Google PageRank Is Great To Measure SEO Results

I cannot count how many times I have had this discussion with multiple people stating that if your website has a PageRank it makes your website even higher in the search engines which is completely untrue. If you install the Google toolbar in your browser, you can see each website you visits page rank on a scale from 0 to 10 and that is called Google PageRank. Although it is true that Google uses this tool to rank website pages, it is not an accurate way to measure SEO efforts and results. For one, PageRank is only one of the hundreds metrics Google uses to rank pages – In addition, the PageRank number you see on website pages via the toolbar is not the same number Google uses in their Algorithm.

Myth # 2: By Optimizing Your Meta Tags, You Will Get Better Rankings With Search Engines

If you insert your target keywords into the Meta description and meta-keyword tags on your website pages it will help you rank higher for those keywords which are definitely untrue. For many years Google has not used those Meta tags to influence rankings - One caution though is that your meta-description can show up in the Google search results so it is actually important that your Meta description is accurate, relevant and a compelling description of that website page.

Myth # 3: SEO Is A One-Time Opportunity

SEO can be broken down into two categories:

  • On-Site Optimization
  • Off-Site Optimization (Article Writing)

On-Site Optimization may or may not be a one-time opportunity, depending on the size of your website and how often you update the content. However, article writing should always be an ongoing activity with SEO – You must constantly work to build and attract high quality links so you can continuously improve your rankings. Even if you are ranked number one for each of your desired keywords, you should continue building articles for them to maintain the positions. I mean after all, your competitors are probably working to bump you out of the number one spot!

Myth # 4: Submit Your Website To Google, Yahoo & Bing!

The following major search engines Google, Yahoo and Bing do not rely on submissions to find new website pages because the spiders constantly crawl the web looking for new pages to add to their indexes. The easiest, fastest and most reliable way to get your website pages indexed is to link to them from other high quality, indexed pages.

Myth # 5: Optimizing Your Website Means Measuring/Adjusting Your Density Of Keywords

Of course the search engines would like to return relevant results when a user searches for a particular keyword which means that they will return website pages that include that keyword. Currently the search engines indicate they use more complex algorithms than keyword density to determine what the website is actually about. The best thing to do would be to write content with the mindset of “How can I write content so that users searching for my keywords will find the info they really want?” Also be sure that you use your target keyword(s) a few times on the webpage.
